The Fort St. George Walk

Fort St. George was the earliest fort built by the English in India. Founded in 1644, the fort soon grew to became a business hub, and led to the formation of Madras city around it. The fort was a key bastion of power in south India, and faced multiple assaults over time. It has housed multiple British Governor Generals in the past, and is today home to the state legislature and other official buildings.

This tour provides insightful glimpses into both the past and the present: the eclectic personalities, pivotal events and momentous decisions that have shaped Chennai and India over the last 300 years. The tour covers the Fort Museum, Cornwallis Cupola, Secretariat, Portuguese Square, St. Mary's Church, King's Barracks, Parade Square, Wellesley House and Clive House.
